The metal industry of Pärnu County has a long historical background, when Pärnu KEK and the engineering plant were still in operation. After Estonia gained independence, a number of small companies were established in the region, some of which have grown over time. The largest metal processing companies of the region were established with foreign capital: AQ Lasertool OÜ and OÜ Stram.

In recent years, the growth of the metal sector in Pärnu County has been on a strong track – new companies with high added value have been established. To satisfy the increasing demand for labour and training needs, a study programme for metal was introduced in the Vocational Centre of Pärnu County.

Development of the sector is supported by the logistically favourable location of Pärnu County and diversified transport facilities: Via Baltica, an airport, seaport and railway. The large number of enterprises indicates the possibilities for cooperating as well as the merging of local capital based companies for the sake of higher efficiency, innovation, product development, and production capacity.

The total number of metal processing companies is approximately 60, providing employment to 658 people.

Major products of the sector:
– metal structures;
– products for the automotive, rail and energy industries (Scania, ABB);
– components for the electronics industry.

The total turnover of the sector in the county was EUR 135 920 063 in 2013, with export turnover accounting for EUR 76 063 022 (56%) and profit 5.1%.
